Improving economic conditions for women in developing countries is a key focus area for the Unity Women’s Desk.

We encourage women to engage in entrepreneurial pursuits by starting their own businesses. In areas where there are participating banking entities, we encourage women to seek investment (micro loans) from such agencies as Kiva and Oikocredit.

In areas where there are no participating banking institutions, the Unity Women’s Desk will offer loans to the women directly.

We also encourage women to form “Lending Circles,” which are groups of women who join together to form cooperatives in which they invest whatever funds they have personally in the group—perhaps $5-10 per woman. The UWD will then match their contributions.
