I believe in the Holy Spirit, the maternal spirit of God who created us and gave us birth and like a mother enfolds us with her maternal arms to care for her children.  A Unity Creed Verse 12.

Instead, we were like young children among you. Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.        I Thessalonians 2:7-8

In the past few weeks, the Unity Women’s Desk Email Inbox and Facebook feeds have been filled with invitations to conferences and rallies, reports on conferences and gatherings, and best of all pictures of women gathering and sharing.   As I contemplated a focus for this month, I kept coming back to all my pictures of women coming together and simply sharing time, hope, and love. This is one powerful way Sisters across the globe address the issues most critical to us: standing and walking together, embracing each other. We can feel overwhelmed trying to solve PROBLEMS like violence, poverty, abuse of power, and disease. But as we gather to do what we can, the Lord blesses us in surprising ways. This is why the UWD is so honored to provide grants for conferences and to share the pictures and stories of your experiences.  Please keep sharing your plans for conferences – your Sisters will pray for the planning, the travel, the power of time spent together worshipping and listening for the guidance of our Lord. Share with us your experiences at gatherings and the actions that often follow special times together. And remember with gratitude the generous Sisters and Brothers who have donated their time and their money to support Sisters everywhere.

Pray with gratitude for a conference of women pastors in Tanzania at the end of August.  They studied, learned and prayed together, and they took to the streets of Mbeya in a powerful march to say no to rape and violence against women.  Pray that their message reached those who needed to hear and that the church will continue to provide hope and help to all victims of violence. Remember Mary Kategile’s leadership among the women there as she teaches at the seminary and completes her own studies.

The Moravian Church in Tanzania will hold a conference for all Tanzanian Sisters Oct 2-6.  Pray for those planning the conference and for our Sisters making plans to attend.

Pray for the Executive Committee of the Unity Board, meeting in Tanzania in mid-September and for a spirit of unity and a vision of what our global church can be.

Pray for the Fall Rally of the Southern Province of North America in Winston-Salem, NC and for the Southern Province Day of Service on September 15.

Lift up the Sisters in the Moravian Church in Costa Rica and the International Conference taking place these last days of August and early September.  Pray for the delegation of women from Nicaragua who have traveled to be with them and share this time together. Pray also for our Sisters in Peru, Honduras, Suriname and the Carribean.

Remember our Sisters in Germany as they gather for a seminar at Herrnhaag  27. September 2019 – 29. There will also be a gathering in Neudietendorf September 28.

Pray for Moravian Sisters and Brothers in Switzerland who gathered for their annual festival at Montmirail and generously invited UWD Coordinator Julie Tomberlin and Advisory Board Member Erdmute Frank to share the work of the Unity Women’s Desk in worship and at a Lovefeast. Pray for new ways to work together across national and language borders to follow Jesus Christ together, especially through the work of Mission 21.

Pray for the Moravian Mission Boards meeting in Basel, Switzerland the first week in September, that they would learn from each other and be open to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit as they seek to partner with Sisters and Brothers throughout the Unity.

Pray for Sister Safie Braima as she returns to Sierra Leone from an extended visit in North Carolina.  She has been confirmed as an acolyte so she can lead the work she and her blessed husband Mohamed shared for so many years.  Pray for the leaders at the school and congregations there. Pray also for Sister Donna Hurt from North Carolina as she goes to visit the community in Sierra Leone.

Remember all the students in countries where a new school year starts this month. Pray for the girls and women who have received UWD scholarships, and for those who have supported them through prayer and financial donations.

Please pray for the UWD as we appoint a new Sub-Desk Coordinator in Tanzania and work to improve communication with coordinators in all Provinces and to streamline our application process. Applications for our next Advisory Board meeting should be received by November 1. Contact Julie with questions: julie.unitywomen@gmail.com
